Every spring, American Robins are the first birds to build their nests in my garden’s climbing roses that grow all over the fence that surrounds it. This is a perfect spot for them because it’s secure from predators, near ample food thanks to a well-tended garden, and close to water. They seem to tolerate me peeking in between the thorny tangle to see the progress. I have to admit, though, it’s quite distracting. When I should be tending to weeds or other chores in the garden, I find myself observing the nest building process as they weave and sculpt a perfect home. There are so many lessons to be learned here — cooperation, teamwork, precision.
While it takes an ordinary bird more than 30 hours to build a nest in the spring, you can make these cute little White Chocolate-Pretzel Easter Egg Nests in just a few minutes!
Here’s what you need:
Melt the white chocolate chips and shortening in microwave oven, pour over pretzels, and mix to coat.
Shape mixture into 10 “nests” and place on parchment-lined baking sheet to set up.
Top with candy-coated milk chocolate mini eggs or speckled jelly beans. Enjoy!
- 1 cup (6-ounces) white chocolate chips
- 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening, plain or butter-flavor
- 2 cups (about 5-ounces) pretzel sticks, broken into bite-size pieces
- 30 candy-coated milk chocolate mini eggs or speckled jelly beans
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.
- Place the white chocolate chips and shortening in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in microwave oven on 50% power until melted, about 1 - 1½ minutes. Pour the melted chocolate over the pretzels and mix to combine.
- Form mixture into 10 "nests" and place on prepared baking sheet. Place in refrigerator 10 minutes to set up.
- Top each nest with 3 mini chocolate eggs and enjoy!
Here’s a little tip to help out our feathered friends who build those real nests!
Oooh…love the nesting kit! Hair from my brush? I’ve got tons of cat hair…wonder how they’d feel about that? Probably not too good, huh? 🙂
Maybe not the cat hair but ya never know! 😉
