Have you tried it? However you say it, put this on your end of summer to-do list.
A wine based cocktail from Spain and Portugal, the makeup of this fruity drink varies greatly. Sangria almost always contains fresh fruit, vodka or brandy, and a sweetener ranging from orange juice to honey. With such a wide range of possibilities, I set off to make a lighter version containing fresh summer berries that I’ve been enjoying from this year’s garden.
Awhile back I was in Las Vegas for the World Food Championships and I met up with a couple of friends — Julie Hession of Peanut Butter & Julie and Christy Vanover of both Zestuous and Girls Can Grill — for a debrief of the week’s events.
Both are Vegas locals and were able to secure us a prime spot at Giada for brunch. And while the food was really good, the thing I remember most was a refreshing white wine sangria they served. I was of the opinion why ruin a perfectly good bottle of wine by mixing stuff in it. But after having this delicious creation, I changed my mind.
So, when Colavita asked me to create some summer recipes, I knew I wanted to come up with something special using the Pinot Grigio from their new wine collection. And although it is perfect on its own, this refreshing wine is versatile enough to use in a variety of creations.
I think you need to make this this weekend. Cheers and enjoy!
- 1 bottle Colavita Pinot Grigio Wine
- ½ cup vodka
- ¼ cup elderflower liqueur
- ⅔ cup sliced strawberries
- ⅔ cup blueberries
- ⅓ cup raspberries
- ⅓ cup blackberries
- ice cubes
- club soda, chilled
- fresh mint sprigs for swizzle stick
- In a large pitcher combine wine, vodka, liqueur, and berries and refrigerate to chill.
- To serve, muddle a few of the berries in each glass. Add ice, fill two-thirds full with wine mixture, and top with club soda. Serve with fresh mint sprigs.
