When we first moved into Kramer House, we knew a large garden would be a part of the plan. The land above the stone wall in the back yard seemed like the logical choice but it was on a slope. Would this even be possible? We decided that raised beds would solve the problem. As an added bonus, raised beds would allow us to design an organized space with beds of different sizes and would allow us to control the composition of the soil. It has evolved over several years and over time we have added a rose garden, espaliered apple trees, and a thicket of blueberry bushes. Along with annual vegetables, herbs, and strawberry plants, we have a lot of deliciousness to preserve, dehydrate, cook, and enjoy! We’ll be adding a potting shed soon with an attached chicken coop. Remember those trees that were taken down when we first moved in? Well, we had them chipped up and used them for the garden paths. We also reused bricks from a walkway on the property to to build the bed for the rose garden. Check out the before, during, and after pictures below!
