I need your help! You’ve heard we’re getting chickens, right? I know, I know — I’ve only posted about it here, here, and here. Well, the chickens are going to live in this super cool coop but we need to paint it — well, actually stain it — to protect the wood it’s built out of.
That’s where you come in: Help us pick the color!
We’ve narrowed it down to to an earthy brown, a crisp white, and a warm red.
Consider:
- How the color will look with the metal roof?
- How will it look in the summer with everything green or in the dead of winter?
- An arbor with climbing vines will eventually live on the front.
- How will it look with the house?
Each color has merits and there’s no definite perfect choice but your input will make it easier for us to decide. So click around and see it in the different seasons before you make your choice and then leave is a comment below with brown, white, or red.
Thanks for your input!
Here’s a sneak peek at the chicken run! Rich has been building it this winter in the barns and this is the first two-thirds. In total it will be 30 feet long so the chickens will have lots of room to roam while being totally protected from the dangers lurking around.
Three of course give them diva chicks something bright! Happy chicks lay happy eggs!
Brown.
the red trimmed in white, what color is the roof -white? or was that snow
Red
I like 1, the brown.
red
Can you paint it seasonally? Just kidding! I have to go with classic warm red followed by earthy brown. Definitely not crisp white. Warm red reminds me of a classic barn. Metal roofs and red barns look great together. The red would stand well against the environmental color changes, green, brown, and white. Will it go with the color of your front door? And do you want the coop to stand out or your home to stand out. Gosh darn, I’d flip to white then ~ (never ask a phlegmatic her opinion).
Earthy brown would look great with vines growing up but might look a little hot in summer. A metal roof with brown looks a little shaggy.
In the end, you could play it safe with white. White is easy to paint over in a year if it is too boring. Red and brown would be a bare to paint white if you tire of the bolder colors.
I like the red.
Brett, I go with the red. Easy to spot in bad weather. You are right barns with tin roofs are awesome! From a city girl that has turned country.
3 – Red!!
I like white. Crisp and clean with a nice back drop to flowers. Will look great in the winter with all the snow. It will blend better with the house.
Although I like #1 earthy brown I think #3 Red would look best with your house and the easiest to spot in all types of weather. Nice job on the coop!
I really like the red with brown coming in second…
Brett. .Love the red!!!! Hailing from fair state of Iowa. .can’t go wrong with a red building on your property! !!!
I vote for the red !
I like the warm red.
Red, then brown. Beautiful coop!
#3 ladies always feel good in red!
Red! It will look beautiful in the winter, and will contrast nicely with the greens on summer! This color red will also look great with many colors of metals roofs. Have fun! This has given me some good ideas for our new coop!
I agree with Merry’s comments, and would opt for warm red 🙂
I’d go with the warm red.
I think I like the brown. Definitely not the white.
Everyone does red and brown do the white :>]
I like the red
I like earthy brown, although any of your choices will look great!
I will have to say Red. When I think of chickens, I think Red!
Go with the Red
i like #3. It looks good with the metal roof, the color goes with all seasons and it’s bright and cheery for chicken parents as well as chickens! Enjoy! Chickens are so much fun!
RED!!!
My favorite color ……. RED!!! Looks beautiful, Brett!!! I’m sure whatever color you decide on will be awesome ….. did you ask the chickens what color they prefer??? You gotta keep them happY!!!!
I like #3 also.
I do love the look of red, particularly in winter with snow. Unless your house and other structures on property are red too then I think it would be a miss match. I bought a home in Adirondacks NY. there is a small cabin that was probably the previews owners man cave, Well it is now my barn, garden and feed storage and coop was built off side of it It is 8 yr. weathered pine so it is fairly dark with a red tin roof. Very pretty, I would choose the 1st color, earthy brown.
Brett…I vote red which would compliment greenery in summer and stand out proudly in the winters snow.
love the red, brown would be my second choice!
Red
Definitely 3!!!!
Red!
I think red is the best!
Red, hands down
RED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Clearly the best color for the Hen Residence!
The red is very rustic and beautiful
I like all three, and love how they look together! So how about all of them in some way? White shed, brown trim, red door? Have fun!
#3 Red, of course. No contest.
6 votes here…all for red!
I say White it will be cooler in the summer time ! Maybe with some red trim .
.
Red.
Looking at the colors you have have choses I would say red, trimmed in white with a green or gray metal roof. The. You could add shuttered. I had a really cute one that I painted flamingo pink trimmed in white and a green roof. Shutters are also an option. it looked so festive at christmas with lights.
Red will look nice with the green grass, trees
I would pick #1!! because it looks rustic.
Red. Just because it seems right.
I was thinking red just reading the title of the post, before seeing the options. And after seeing the three choices, I still say red! The coop looks awesome, by the way.
We painted our Purple and named it “The Egg Plant”
Oh my! I have trouble deciding on my own paint colors. I am so indecisive. But for your project, I vote RED. 🙂
red of course
My first choice would be the red, it will give it a burst of color in winter and still stand out enough in the middle of summer. My second choice would be the brown, which I think would look great in summer but I think it would be a little less stunning in the winter months. I would not pick the white at all. I think it would be way to hard to keep looking well especially because of the chickens and their habits.
Brett, I think I have already been outnumbered by those choosing red – that would be my second choice, but I really have to vote for #1. A neutral wood tone would weather well year-round, and probably be much lower maintenance than other options. IMHO, don’t even think about white especially if you are contemplating vines. But I’m sure no matter what you end up choosing, it will be one elegant chicken house! 🙂
Red of course! Perfect in ANY season – fall red colors, stand out in white winters . .. perfect I think!
Red would look charming in the green garden, and agains the white snow of winter – and it complements the beautiful red door on the front of your beautiful home. The chicken run looks awesome!!!
Red – I like the warm & bright colors – especially cheerful in the winter !
you are in Amish country so go that way your girls will feel right at home with red and white trim
